Inverness Museum is pleased to be welcoming visitors again, and have created a canine-themed family trail around the museum – you now can visit and help our new acquisition find his pack by looking for the canines in the museum displays, and see if you can locate the lost red socks! This activity is to mark a new painting on display in the museum.
On the Moors is an oil painting by Richard Ansdell RA, painted in 1865. His work can be found in many museums and galleries in England but Inverness Museum is the first Scottish institution to acquire a painting of his.
It features a gundog with a ptarmigan in its mouth with another dog in the background. Ansdell lived in England but spent many summers in the Highlands, accompanying shooting parties and painting the animals and landscapes.
The painting was purchased by Inverness Museum & Art Gallery with grant aid from the Art Fund and the National Fund for Acquisitions from the estate of the late John Lindsay Boyd of Inverness, with assistance from his family in memory of both John Lindsay Boyd and his late wife Molly.
To offer some canine company to our new painting, we have re-displayed ‘The Lost Socks’ by local artist Rachel Everitt and created a ‘Lost Socks’ trail for young children while older children can look for the canines in our museum displays.
