As part of Scotland’s Year of Stories, High Life Highland has secured funding from Museums and Galleries Scotland for a Lochaber-wide quilt project.
The aim of the Weaving Tales project is to create a story quilt, with each square telling the story of its creator, which will also be shared in an accompanying storybook.
Highland’s Heritage Ranger Michelle Melville said: “This project is for all ages – from our youngest residents to our oldest – and I am delighted to be offering instructional workshops across Lochaber in a variety of techniques.
“From a simple hand or footprint to an embroidered or needle-felted piece, from realistic to abstract, it’s your quilt and your stories and for those unable to create their own square, that is no problem as we can capture the story and find someone who can create a square for you.
“We are looking for those keen to sew squares and those who would like to learn how to do it.”
Events will be running all summer and into the winter and material for the square will be available from Fort William Library where you can also drop in and start making.
Quilt squares can be created using many different techniques from needle-felting to fabric painting, printing transfer of a photograph, woven or applique, embroidery, and cross-stitch.
High Life Highland will also be announcing special guests to voice and share their own tales.
Keep an eye out for posters and Facebook posts to see what events are running.
The project has been supported by the Year of Stories 2022 Community Stories Fund.
This fund is being delivered in partnership between VisitScotland and Museums Galleries Scotland with support from National Lottery Heritage Fund thanks to National Lottery players.
