The new link building, which connects the three separate parts of Inverness Castle, took a step closer to reality this week with the first pour of its intricate roof structure. The new construction, which will house the new restaurant and bar, has a bespoke ‘saltire grid’ roof structure, made from the same materials as the castle buildings themselves.
The innovative and contemporary structure, designed by LDN Architects and NARRO structural engineers, is inspired by the Scottish Saltire and the expressed ceiling structures present in the interiors of the castle. Its elegant, long spanning and interwoven roof beams, between which will sit large glass rooflights, have been very carefully made by a team of specialist contractors under the supervision of Bancon Construction. The construction of the link building roof will continue over the coming weeks with the main structural elements due to be complete before the end of the year.
The Inverness Castle Experience project is part of the Inverness and Highland City-Region Deal, which is a joint initiative supported by up to £315m investment from the UK and Scottish governments, The Highland Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and University of the Highlands and Islands, aimed at stimulating sustainable regional economic growth.
