In recognition of what Autumn brings, High Life Highland’s Countryside Ranger for the Inverness Area, John Orr, will be co-facilitating a relaxing and informative walk titled ‘Canals, Curlews and Cormorants’.
John shared: “I’m really looking forward leading this crisp, Autumn, Inverness walk. It’s such a special time of year to be out and about exploring everything that the changing season has to offer.
“We’ll be joined by Rebekah Stevenson from Scottish Canals, to explore both the Caledonian Canal and Merkinch Local Nature Reserve.
“This walk will be approximately 4km long, taking no more than 2 hours at an easy-going pace on a wheelchair-friendly path, with plenty of opportunities to pause and reflect on various scenes and wildlife spotted along the way.
“Not only will you get your daily steps in, but you’ll also get to take a closer look at some of Inverness’ wildlife hotspots.”
Rebekah added: “I’m so excited to be a part of this guided walk, which will give attendees from the local community an opportunity to get out in nature and take in some of the rich diversity of wildlife in and around the Caledonian Canal and Merkinch Local Nature Reserve.
“Alongside this, we will be exploring the fascinating local history and heritage of the Caledonian Canal.”
Originally planned for Wednesday 8th November, the guided ‘Canals, Curlews and Cormorants’ walk will now be taking place on Thursday 23rd November with a new time of 2pm to 4pm.
Starting from this meeting spot: Tree House, Carsegate Road (Inverness, IV3 8EX), attendees can expect to take in some of the beautiful Merkinch Local Nature Reserve, explore their history, and to spot some wildlife along the tow path and seawall.
It may also provide excellent photograph opportunities to budding wildlife enthusiasts.

“Canals act as corridors for wildlife connecting habitats and allowing movement, whilst providing an all-important aquatic environment that supports various species and contributes to ecological richness.”
