Transport
People use, and have used, many different methods to get from one place to another. These documents and photographs show boats, ships, helicopters, trains and stagecoaches as well as some information about sailings and ports.
Here are some examples of transport that people used to get around.
The Kessock Ferry photograph is provided courtesy of our friends at the Highland Photographic Archive.
Transport wasn’t just used to move people around, though. These images show transport that was used to move lots of items including letters and post.
In January 1955 virtually all of Scotland north of the Caledonian Canal was cut off by one of the most severe winters ever experienced. The isolated communities were unable to get even the barest essentials. The Royal Airforce and Navy had to be mobilised to help, this venture was named “Operation Snowdrop”. These photographs show them delivering supplies and rescuing sheep from the harsh weather.
