In August 1903, 11 year old Malcolm Blane wrote an account of a tour he and his family undertook, taking in a steamer trip from Inverness to Oban via the Caledonian Canal and the return journey by train through Crianlarich, Calendar, Perth and Aberdeen to Nairn.
After an overnight stay in Inverness, Malcolm Blane and his father joined the P.S. Gairlochy for the journey along the Caledonian Canal. Leaving Muirton (Inverness) at 7.00am, they arrived at Fort William at 4.15pm and Oban at 7.10pm, where they stayed overnight at the Great Western Hotel.
Malcolm’s diaries are held at the Highland Archive Centre, Inverness and are available to view in the Searchroom.
