Family History

There are many ways the Highland Archive Service can help you with your Family History research goals.

The Family History Room is located on the first floor of the Highland Archive Centre at Bught Road, Inverness. The room contains a variety of resources which will be of use to the family historian who is researching Highland roots.

The staff in the family history room are experts in the field of Highland and Scottish genealogy:  their expertise can be accessed either in person through our one to one consultation service, or via remote enquiry.

  • Remote Enquiries – our staff can undertake research on your behalf and produce Family Trees for you. Research is charged at £36 per hour, plus extra for copies or certificates.
  • One-to-one Consultations – you can have a virtual or in-person consultation with the Family Historian to discuss and progress your research. Consultations are charged at £36 per hour, plus extra for copies or certificates. Specific times for consultations can be discussed for international customers. To arrange a consultation please email [email protected]
  • Family History Classes – Family History for Beginners classes and Advanced Family History classes are run several times a year by the Family Historian, and are now run virtually over Zoom. Classes cover various core records of Family History research. This includes Old Parish Records, Census Records, Statutory Records and a brief introduction to Archival Records. The Family Historian also offers real examples of research, live demonstrations of online resources and a chance to get your own research questions answered.
