High Life Highland’s 5th Birthday Celebrations

High Life Highland is 5 years old this year and has spent those years delivering high quality facilities and experiences to the individuals and communities throughout the Highlands. Whether your interest is in keeping fit, carrying out research in to your family or community, reading, gathering material for your school class or school homework, or participating in activities designed especially for the school summer holidays, you have been enjoying the dedication and enthusiastic work of the staff of High Life Highland.

The Highland Archive Service is offering a variety of events to help celebrate the occasion.

13 October, 11 am – 6.30 pm. Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre will be having a “longer than usual” Open Day. There will be exhibitions and the chance to have a tour behind the scenes, as well as the opportunity to browse through old photographs, rekindle memories with back copies of the Highland Free Press, and to find out about the wealth of archival material available for local and family history research.

19 October, 12 midday-1 pm. Lochaber Archive Centre will be giving a talk on the records of Arisaig House, 1850-1993. This talk will cover the history of the Arisaig Estate using the archive material deposited at the archive centre. A donation of £3 per person is suggested.

22 October, 10 am – 1 pm. Caitness Archive Centre is having a Saturday Open Morning when the archive and library staff will be offering the opportunity to take part in a Treasured Wick game. This will involve dividing up a large map of Wick into squares including one special “winning” square. The lucky participant who chooses the winning square will win a prize. Copies of the map will also be available to buy.

22 October, 11 am – 4 pm. Highland Archive Centre is Opening Our Doors to visitors. You will be able to drop in to enjoy an exhibition of stories from the archives, to watch old Highland films, to find out about family history resources and have the chance to ask the experts about your family tree. There will be a live demonstration of conservation techniques and the opportunity to have a tour behind the scenes (a place on the tours need to be booked in advance please).
