You Time Class “Records of the Potato Famine in Lochaber”

Alex Du Toit, Lochaber Archivist, enjoys showcasing unusual and interesting documents which relate to the history of the area, as part of the You Time Programme.

This particular class will look at the potato famine which afflicted the people of Lochaber in the mid nineteenth century.

Just over 100 years ago, during the period 1845-1857, communities throughout Scotland were in dire straits because of the blight effecting the potato crop. It was a time of great privation in Lochaber too. Alex has uncovered original archive material from the time, which documents the actions of the local authorities and landowners.

If you are interested in the history of the area you  will find the class fascinating. You will investigate how the famine affected the people of Lochaber and will look at the various attempts made to deal with the situation.

The class will take place at the Lochaber Archive Centre, West Highland College, Fort William on 5 October, 12 midday-1 pm.
