Mollie McGoran, a young person from Alness said she was “absolutely delighted” to have been elected as Chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament.
The members of the Scottish Youth Parliament, and her peers, recently voted Mollie McGoran, a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP) for Inverness and Nairn, Highland as their new Chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament.
Mollie is an experienced MSYP, having recently held the office of Vice Chair of Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) prior to being voted by her fellow members into the Chair’s position at the Youth Parliament’s AGM.
Speaking following her election to office, Mollie said, “I am absolutely delighted to have been elected Scottish Youth Parliament Chair. I am so excited to continue my youth parliamentary journey in this new role and to work with the new board and membership.”
Mollie has been involved in youth forum work locally in Alness and the Highland Youth Parliament for many years.
Entering her fourth year as a MSYP, Mollie has held a long list of posts and offices all dedicated to supporting and representing young people, not only in the Highlands, but also nationally.
Having previously represented the Caithness, Sutherland and Ross area as well as being a SYP Trustee for National Campaigns and Conveners Group; Convener of the Transport, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee; and SYP Vice-Chair. It is clear to see this young person’s commitment to representing youth voices on a local, regional, and national stage.
As SYP Chair, Mollie will now lead on SYP’s activities over the next year. She will be joined by newly elected Vice-Chair, Ellie Craig MSYP from Glasgow Cathcart and the SYP Board of Trustees.
Alongside her SYP colleagues, Mollie will be supported by members of High Life Highland’s Youth Team. Speaking following her appointment, Audrey Anthoney, one of HLH’s Senior Youth Development Officers said, “We are delighted for Mollie. It’s so well deserved, and she’ll be brilliant in the role. She’s a great role model for the other Highland MSYPs and we’re really looking forward to supporting Mollie and seeing her develop into her new position.”
SYP is the democratically elected voice of Scotland’s young people and provides a national platform for young people to discuss the issues that are important to them, and campaign for changes to the nation that they live in. SYP supports members in their work by training them, supporting their personal development and empowering them, using a youth work ethos.
MSYPs range in age from 14 to 25 and represent constituencies in all 32 local authorities and 11 national voluntary organisations. MSYPs listen to and recognise the issues that are most important to young people in every community across the country and ensure that decision-makers listen to their voices.
