Barbara Rae exhibition opens at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery

Times and Places

Barbara Rae CBE RA – The Provost James Rae Trust

The latest exhibition at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery is a stunning collection of works by renowned Scottish artist Barbara Rae CBE RA.

It features a colourful selection of paintings and prints predominantly of the artist’s Scottish work, selected from the recent show at the MacLaurin Galleries, Ayr.

Titled ‘Times and Places’, the exhibition delves into how Rae has perceived and interpreted the land throughout her career, often visiting specific locations frequently to view and capture the ever-evolving environment. The show illustrates the gradual evolution of her work and how Rae continues to record the memory of the landscape, how the works themselves are the witnesses to human presence and changes over time.

Dr Barbara Rae CBE, RA, RSA, HRE, HRWS, RGI, FRCA, FRSE, HFRIAS Royal Academician painter and master print maker, is recognised internationally as an outstanding colourist. Recipient of numerous awards, scholarships and honorary degrees, her work is exhibited in national museums and public and private collections the world over.

Rae studied at the Edinburgh college of Art, later lecturing at the Glasgow School of Art after some years as a secondary school art teacher. Her inspirations are the people, locations and local histories of the places she records, with studies shown throughout her many sketchbooks, later developed as prints and paintings.

She has collaborated with many other artists and makers on tapestries, ceramics and jewellery and even a Royal Mail commemorative stamp.

The Provost James Rae Trust was established to administer the Barbara Rae RA CBE archive of paintings and prints. The purpose of the Trust is to raise funds to help artists with specific projects that they otherwise would not be able to afford.

The exhibition runs until 18th January 2025 at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. For more information on Barbara Rae, please visit her website. For more information on the Provost James Trust please email: [email protected]
