Golspie High School was the venue for the recent annual East Sutherland Schools Sports Association (ESSSA) Benchball Tournament for primary four and five pupils. Seven out of eight local schools were represented with around 70 pupils in total attending!
A dozen teams were entered – five girls teams, four boys teams and three mixed teams in total – with every player giving it their all.
Elissa Stevenson, Active Schools Co-ordinator with High Life Highland commented: “It was great to see the pupils excited to take part in the tournament, particularly the new primary fours who hadn’t taken part before! There was great support from the school staff and parents and carers which makes for a positive atmosphere.
“The pupils have all been busy in the weeks leading up to the event training hard with their teams and we are very grateful to the volunteers and staff who have been leading these sessions – this contributes directly to getting more children, more active, more often. These events are also social settings for pupils to make new friends which is also really important.
“My sincere thanks to everyone who helped on the day and to Councillor Richard Gale who presented the trophies and medals.”
Young sports leaders from Golspie High School helped with the smooth running of the tournament, refereeing, keeping scores and so on, alongside their PE teacher, Mrs Sutherland and Golspie Primary School volunteer Gayle MacRae.
Trophies were awarded to the schools coming first in the Small Schools, Big Schools and Mixed categories, as well as each pupil receiving a medal for first and second place.
