Fabulous fundraisers keep fit to help young carers

An intrepid group of ten senior gym goers with a collective age of 837 decided to take on a recent challenge at the Leven Centre Open Day, raising an amazing £2237.50 to help young carers.

Tutor/coach with High Life Highland, Maria MacDonald helped set the challenge, which involved participants choosing 10 exercises to complete from a long list. The activities included10 minutes on the treadmill, bike, rower or cross trainer as well as sets of squats, lateral pulls, bicep curls, leg presses and many more.

The fabulous fundraisers are all regular attenders at Maria’s Dynamic Wellbeing, Fit Plus, Otago and Escape Pain classes at the Leven Centre and the Lochaber branch of Connecting Young Carers are the grateful recipients of their exercising efforts!

Maria explained: “When my class participants heard High Life Highland was hosting an open day here at the Leven Centre they asked for a challenge to be set for them and they would use it as an opportunity to raise some money for a local worthy cause – as well as having some fun at the same time.

“So I put together a list of exercises for them and they had to choose 10 to complete on the day. Everyone was excited to get involved – there was no ‘maybe’ about it, they all signed up willingly and were full of enthusiasm for the challenge.

“They all did amazingly well – with everyone completing the challenge and some hardy souls even doing more than actually required – and in doing so they raised a fantastic amount of money for Connecting Young Carers! Well done to all of them.”

Jan Gosden is one of the class participants that took part in the recent fundraiser. She said: “We seniors who attend the weekly Dynamic Wellbeing exercise class led by Maria at The Leven Centre are finding great benefits to our overall health. We saw the Open Day as an opportunity for us to show how positive the class is both physically and socially. We decided to raise the money for Young Carers in Lochaber and we would like to thank all those who donated. Our initial target was surpassed three times over”.
