Golspie High School hosts successful Basketball Tournament for schools across East Sutherland

Big Schools Boys Second Dornoch PS Nov 23

East Sutherland’s eight Primary Schools were represented at the East Sutherland Schools Sports Association (ESSSA) Basketball Tournament on Tuesday 21st November, which this year was hosted at Golspie High School.

The tournament was intended for participation by P6 and P7 pupils. In total, there were 13 teams: 5 boys teams, 4 girls teams, and 4 mixed teams. Each category played in a ‘round robin’ competition style, with games lasting five minutes each.

The games were refereed by seven sports leaders from Golspie High School: Grace Howard, Niamh Fox, Robyn Booth, Martha Sutherland, Alfie Macleod, Xanthie Mackay and Roxanne Lewis.

They were assisted by PE teacher Mrs Gollan, who kept a close eye to ensure a smooth running of the event. On the score table was Active Schools Volunteer, Gayle Macrae, who helped sort the results.

Murdoch Jamieson, one of High Life Highland’s Active Schools Co-ordinators who assisted with the organisation of the event, said: “It was great to see all the schools in the area attend.

“Many thanks to the school staff, parents, and volunteers for taking their teams to the event.  Your encouragement and cheering throughout created such a positive atmosphere.

“The event allowed pupils to make new friends and connections across different schools in the area, so there is a huge social benefit as well as encouraging pupils to be physically active.

“The training for these tournaments starts weeks in advance, with practice sessions during school, lunchtime, and after school. Huge thanks to school staff and local volunteers for hard work in preparing pupils. Well done to everyone!”

Trophies were awarded by Councillor Jim McGillivray to the schools coming first in the Small Schools, Big Schools, and Mixed categories, as well as each pupil receiving a medal for first and second place.
