Many Highland families have benefited from a joint effort by MFR Cash for Kids and High Life Highland (HLH) to deliver Family Learning Packs to families with disabled and disadvantaged children in the area this month.
With funding support from MFR Cash for Kids, HLH Adult Learning team prepared packs specially designed to support families where there were young people continuing to learn from home during the period of the pandemic. HLH staff worked with each individual family to create the pack content, based on the ages and interests of the child or young person. Each pack contained resources to support learning in a fun and accessible way, including items for literacy and numeracy learning, as well as material for outdoor play and to encourage creativity.
The packs, delivered at the beginning of June, have been backed with further support and guidance from HLH Adult Learning team with suggestions for parents of ideas for getting involved in their child’s learning and play using the resources provided.
Cash for Kids is the official charity of Moray Firth Radio and provides a helping hand to disabled and disadvantaged children around the Highlands, Moray and Aberdeenshire. Thousands of pounds is made available through grants to children’s charities, individuals and many other causes throughout the MFR transmission area. All the money is raised locally and spent locally and goes to children and young people under 18 throughout the region, with mental, physical or sensory disabilities, with behavioural or psychological disorders, living in poverty or situations of deprivation, suffering through distress, abuse or neglect.
High Life Highland’s Adult Learning Manager, Mike Jones, said: “The Family Learning Packs are just one of the ways we have continued to engage with our most at-risk or vulnerable families during the Covid-19 pandemic. Its been great to have had support from Cash for Kids to be able to do something to help our communities during this unusual period.”

Our emergency appeal was established to give immediate support to families who are struggling with the current situation. Together with High Life Highland we have done exactly that and these packs are proving to be a valuable resource for parents and carers to turn to throughout lockdown.”
