No more waiting for weightlifters with the Northern Districts Weightlifting Championships taking place this weekend (Saturday 20th July) at Inverness Leisure!
Organised by the Highland Weightlifting Club in association with Weightlifting Scotland, this is the third year in a row that Inverness Leisure has hosted this prestigious competition, which has attracted a record number of competitors including local talent across the age categories.
Among those taking part include Scottish Junior Weightlifting Champions Mischa Allan (14) from Invergordon and Calum Low (14) and Patrick Johnson (14) both from Culloden, along with Highland Weightlifting Club and Inverness Olympic Weightlifting Club members.
The majority of lifters entered in this year’s competition are female. Nicki Grant, Head Coach at Highland Weightlifting Club – who is part of the Team Scotland coaching team – said: “It’s terrific to be hosting such a thriving regional event in the Highlands, it provides local athletes with the opportunity to compete locally and each year we see the standard rising north of the central belt. This year sees a very high number of female entries and people of all ages competing, it will be a truly inclusive event and a great advert for our sport.”
Scottish champion Karen Saint from the Inverness Olympic Club is also taking part in the competition this weekend. She commented: “It is great to be able to represent my club locally, its extra special having friends and family along to watch and so good of Weightlifting Scotland to support a big event like this in the Highlands.”
The Strength and Conditioning Room at High Life Highland’s Inverness Leisure is the venue for the competition, demonstrating the quality of the equipment and set up in the facility.
Inverness Leisure Manager Steven Clelland said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Northern Districts Weightlifting Championships again this year. We are very proud of the investment – in partnership with Sportscotland – that we have made in our Strength and Conditioning Room here at Inverness Leisure, meeting demand from those involved in the sport at competition level as well as our members who simply want to improve their physical and mental health through weightlifting. We wish all the competitors good luck this weekend!”
Richard Tawse, Chief Executive of Weightlifting Scotland added: “It is great to see almost 50 lifters registered for this weekend’s competition and it shows how weightlifting in Scotland is continuing to grow.”
The competition gets underway at 10am this Saturday with spectators welcome to come along and show their support.
