With seven weeks of summer holidays this year, Active Schools in partnership with a variety of groups and other High Life Highland services offered a programme of activities and sports throughout July & August!
It was a very busy programme with Summer Olympic Camps, Dance, Yoga, Tennis and outdoor Countryside Ranger led activities – Nature Olympics and Seashore Safari; all aimed at primary children. As well as activities organised specifically for youths in parentship with Brora Youth Room and Golspie Youth Action Project, which was funded by Planet Youth in Highland; Rounders, Football, Dodgeball, Yoga and Highland Games.
Elissa Stevenson, Active School for East Sutherland, said: “It was the first time we had organised camps which were four or five hours long but it was a great success with most camps being fully booked.
“The camps consisted of Olympic themed sports and games then a session at the local library and some camps had an Olympic themed nature session with the Countryside Ranger.
“It was great to work with Library and Ranger colleagues and give the children a variety of activities throughout the day. I was also fortunate to have Sports Leaders from Golspie High School and Dornoch Academy helping with some of the activities, as well as employing local coaches to lead the Yoga, Dance and Tennis.”
A Family Summer Treasure Hunt was also set up with every library in East Sutherland, a fun word hunt around each village to then unscramble the anagram to reveal the answer! The hunt ran over the whole summer which meant families could complete it at their leisure, collecting and returning forms when their library was open. It’s a great way to increase visits to the library as well as offering a free local activity for all the family.
