Memorial of the Magistrates of the Town Council of Dingwall, 1740
This memorial comes from the Inverness Burgh Papers and is addressed to the City of Edinburgh and all other burghs of Scotland. In it the Magistrates of Dingwall complain of the behaviour of Sir Robert Munro of Foulis and Captain George Munro of Culcairn in their attempts to rig council elections. The two are accused, not only of obtaining false warrants to carry off several members of the council, but also of the murder of a local merchant’s wife and the wounding of several others during a riot in Dingwall on 29th September, 1740. The letter contains very descriptive language and paints a vivid picture of the events.
