This free event seeks to illustrate the extent to which Highland families were involved in the ownership of slaves and plantations in the Caribbean and the lasting impact of those connections.
Lectures will be given by: Dr David Alston: “’You have seen only the fortunate few’: Using behavioural economics to understand why Highland Scots accepted the risks of migration to the Caribbean” and Michael Hopcroft (Glasgow Caledonian University): “Mapping Highland Plantation Ownership, 1780-1834”.
There will also be a display of letters and records from the Highland Archive Centre’s collections.
