The SINDEX Tartan Index (Ref. HCA/D108/1/4/1) is a very interesting item in our Tartan Archive, D108. SINDEX (short hand for Sett index) is a filing system containing information for respective tartans recorded on a single card. Included are a colour strip, the tartan name, and the ‘sett-log’ or ‘slog’, an indexing code providing information on the pivots of a particular tartan. The cards also contain thread counts, and source information. The SINDEX was initially developed by D.C. Stewart to aid research for his book ‘The Setts of the Scottish Tartans’.
