Letter by William Fraser Tytler to his wife, written whilst holding a court in
Alvie Church, 1832
The Highland Archive Centre holds many letters written by Sheriff Depute William Fraser Tytler to his wife, Margaret, whilst travelling round Scotland attending courts. This particular letter describes what happened when Alvie Church (where a court was being held) became too cold and proceedings had to be moved to Alvie Manse. The letter contains a beautifully evocative description of the scene in the manse and the people who were present – a few sentences conjure up a vivid picture of the room and its inhabitants.
