A celebration of the Ash Tree, it’s beauty and importance as a material through an exhibition of contemporary furniture making and art. The Scottish Furniture Makers Association (SFMA) in partnership with Scottish Forestry and the Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers present furniture and artworks from 20 leading and emerging makers practicing in Scotland today. Made from timber from ash trees grown in Killearn, Stirlingshire and felled due to ash die-back, Ash Rise aims to show the diversity of uses of ash as a material through new work from makers working with wood across Scotland. Each piece in the exhibition has been thoughtfully and meticulously crafted to reflect the beauty and characteristics of ash as a material. Each maker responded to the brief in their own individual way, showing a richness and depth of skill and creativity.
Ash Rise Film
A documentary film will tell the story of this beautiful tree, its historic and contemporary brilliance as a material and the challenges of ash die-back. Furniture makers are privileged to experience the sounds, smells and textures of the workshop; the processes that realise the potential in timber are fleeting but beautiful in their own right. The Ash Rise film was created not only to offer an insight into the world of the furniture maker but also to celebrate the ash tree from woodland to workshop, through stories and characters that influence and are influenced by the life of these great trees.
Featuring Tom Addy, Angus and Lorna Ross, Dr. Helen Mackay OBE, Alice Broome, Andrew Macqueen.
Ash Rise is kindly supported by Scottish Forestry and Creative Scotland.
