Whirling Hummock by © Magi Sinclair
The unique and fragile environment of the Highlands. The remnants of one of the last great European wildernesses. A glorious place of mountain, bog, ancient forest and endless skies, scoured by centuries of bad weather and ravaged by uncaring human activity. It has always been huge source of inspiration for artists from the whimsical to the ecologically pioneering, who seek to capture its quicksilver moods in a multitude of media.
Art opens channels of communication for the natural environment which can help us to understand and appreciate this wild northern land in all its scarred beauty, fragility and resilience.
This exhibition explores how artists are interpreting and shaping their observations of the natural world into images. This draws the observer to see aspects of the Highland landscape afresh, as translated through the artist’s hand and eye.
Artists include Ian Westacott, Neil Macpherson, Ian Giles, Emma Caldow, Pamela Tait, Eileen Gatt, Jana Emburey, Magi Sinclair, Pat Semple, Leon Patchett, Alex Main, Rob Christie, Gemma Petrie, Lucy Woodley and Lar MacGregor with Barbara Rae, Dorothy Stirling, Sylvia Wishart and other artworks from our collection.
