On Monday 19th November, Lochaber Archive Centre hosted an event to mark the centenary of the Armistice. The display was dived into the Home Front and The Front, with the object of giving an insight into a variety of war-time experiences.
The Home Front display looked at life in Lochaber between 1914 and 1918. Police Occurrence Books revealed the increased duties of the police force (from locating deserters to investigating breaches of the Defence of the Realm Act; School Log Books showed the impact of the war on children, who knitted mittens for the troops; and Town and Parish Council Minute Books gave a sense of the intense loss sustained by the Lochaber Communities.
The display focusing on The Front looked at the lives of some of those from the area who had served in the conflict including Donald Cameron of Lochiel, who was sent home injured but returned to fight again, as well as suffering the loss of his brother Allan Cameron.
The event was appreciated by all who attended. If you weren’t able to attend but are interested in the subject, the documents on display are all held permanently at Lochaber Archive Centre and we’d be delighted to welcome you!
