It has been a busy summer so far for the Lochaber Archive Centre. Back in June we hosted an ‘Outlander Day’ with the West Highland Museum. The day began at the Museum with our attendees looking at their fascinating Jacobite collections followed by a large display of amazing documents dated from c1680s-1750s relating to the Jacobite Risings at the Lochaber Archive Centre. We had a great day hosting out attendees and working with the Museum.
In July we joined HLH Active Schools for a day during their week of activities at the Lochaber High School. Using an 18th Century map of Fort William as inspiration we asked our groups to name and design their own town with a new crest and motto. The results were brilliant with some very insightful thoughts on town planning!
We also hosted our School’s Out event at the Lochaber Archive Centre – “Cyphers, Symbols and Secrets” We had a lot of fun talking about all the different reasons people use symbols, then created our own personal shields before going on to crack some codes and write our names in secret codes.
We attended the Arisaig Highland Games and Clan Ranald Gathering at the end of July. We had a brilliant talking to people about our collections, the Lochaber Archive Centre and the wider Highland Archive Service.
Over the summer we have also had a number of readers visit the Archive Centre with a wide variety of enquiries and queries. The Centre is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 10am-1pm and 2pm – 5pm.
We are looking forward to welcoming more readers to and hosting more events at the Lochaber Archive Centre over the autumn and winter.
