Area: Assynt, Sutherland

Balchladdich to Stoer head Coast walk, Assynt

Join us for an off-the-beaten track 4km walk along the amazing coastline from Balchladdich beach to Stoer Lighthouse. We will explore this amazing coastline and look for signs of Otters and early migrant birds. Meet at Balchladdich beach and bring packed lunch and good walking boots.

Date: Thursday 3rd April

Area: Northwest Sutherland

Guided walk to Castle Bharraich and beyond

A hill and woodland walk up the path to the castle near Tongue, then further on over the hill, on rough ground, returning to the village by the quiet old road. Superb views to Ben Hope and Ben Loyal as well as over the Kyle of Tongue. 6km approx.

Time: 10.30am – 1pm

Area: Ardnamurchan

Volunteer Day – Sunart Footpaths

Join Ranger Eilidh-Ann and Sunart Community Company on this regular volunteer session. This month we will be making improvements to the Ardnastaing Beach path so please bring gloves, loppers, hand saws and spades. No need to book – this is a drop-in activity.

Time: 1.30pm – 4pm.

Area: Mallaig

Easter Family Fun Day 

Free Fun Easter themed drop in activity day for friends and families to enjoy the Larachmhor (Arisaig) gardens.

Pam, from Mallaig Active schools, and Eilidh-Ann, from the Countryside Rangers, are hosting a fun day of drop-in activities in Arising gardens.

There will be treasure hunts, fun scavenger hunts, Easter art and crafts etc running throughout the day. You can also be a mini beast, spring buds and leaf detective.

Everyone is welcome to come and go as they please on the day. Why not bring a picnic if it’s nice weather? All children must be accompanied by an adult 16 years and over.

Please wear clothing and shoes suitable for the weather. It can be quite muddy in the gardens.

The nearest toilet is in Arisaig village.

Thurso East Rock Pool Rummage – Schools Out

Join the ranger at Thurso East, to discover the fascinating creatures found in the shallow rock pools. Fish, crabs, shellfish and lots of other interesting critters, can be safely captured and returned using our nets. Children can be left for the duration of this activity or an accompanying adult can stay and observe. Please wrap up warm and wear wellington boots. Booking is essential.

Ardnamurchan Easter Fun Club – Strontian

Part of three days of High Life Highland fun activities for Primary aged young people in Ardnamurchan. Join the Ranger for some woodland fun and games, including the all time favourite – den building!

Snap into spring! Join our Anna and Katie for a guided smartphone photography walk, around Flowerdale Arboretum. Learn nature photography skills and tips, create your own mandala and enjoy light refreshments. Perfect for teens, families & beginners—just bring your phone and creativity! Easy path, less than 1 mile, some muddy and steep sections. Please wear appropriate footwear.

The Big Ardersier Beach Clean

Come along for as long as you feel like and help clean up the seashore around Ardersier Bay.

It’s a great opportunity to connect with nature, meet new people, and make a positive impact on the environment. See you there!

Meet at the Pocket Garden car park by the slipway in Ardersier. All equipment provided.

The event is free of course but booking is required. Children must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult. All equipment will be provided.

Schools Out – Seashore Safari at Bishops Bay, North Ballachulish

Join us on a short walk through the woods to the secret Bishops Bay where we will search for the amazing wildlife that can be hidden along the shore. Suitable for families. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear warm clothes, waterproofs and wellies and bring a snack and drink.

Portskerra Rock Pool Rummage – Schools Out

Join the ranger at Portskerra rock pools, to safely catch and study the fascinating creatures who call this place home. Shell Art at Bettyhill Library – Schools Out

Have fun at Bettyhill Library with the ranger and library staff as you decorate your very own piece of shell art. Use glue, paint and coloured pens to create your own masterpiece. You can then take it home to show to everyone. All materials are provided but limited numbers available. Children can be left for the duration of this activity.

Spring into Science at Community Outdoor Learning Hub, Ben Nevis Visitor Centre

Family fun in Glen Nevis. Join the Heritage Ranger and try your hand at some colourful spring themed experiments and crafts in the Community Outdoor Learning Hub. This event is for families with younger children aged 3 to 10 (though younger and older siblings are welcome to come too). All children must be accompanied by an adult

Clachtoll peat road

Ranger led guided through some of the most amazing landscapes of Assynt. On the way we will explore the mysterious Druid’s cave, see sailing ships carved into the bedrock by folk nearly 200 years ago before they left for America and the unique wildlife of the gneiss landscape. Bring packed lunch. 10km walk. Note this walk can be boggy in places. Meet at Clachtoll Beach car park. Grid ref: NC 040273.

Young Minds for Nature, Lochinver

Open to anyone between 11 and 24 years old, to do positive conservation tasks in the Culag Community Woods in Lochinver, such as ditch digging, planting trees, removing small spruce trees, digging ponds, building shelters etc using hand tools. This is part of Assynt’s well-being project. Meet at Assynt Leisure Centre. Bring old clothes and wellies. All tools/gloves are provided.

Sheep to shop – Community Outdoor Learning hub, Ben Nevis Visitor Centre

Learn how to clean, card, dye, spin and weave your own unique slow fashion item on this two-day course. This course is for complete beginners with an interest in learning how to work with one of the earliest fibres used by early humans to create a beautiful and useful shoulder bag or similar item. Clachtoll Broch and Coastal walk

Gentle Ranger ramble – a serene stroll through the incredibly beautiful land and seascape of Clachtoll. We are focussing on slow observations as we head to the iron-age broch. Hear about the new discoveries of the recent excavation, stories of how the iron age people lived and catastrophic collapse that ended it all.  Watch out for early migrant birds and great northern divers and see signs of otters and maybe cetaceans. Bring packed lunch. This is a 4km walk. Meet at Clachtoll Beach car park. Grid ref: NC 040273.

A Guided coastal walk on Faraid Head by Durness

Part of the Beach of Dreams programme 2025 Beach of Dreams

A gentle 4km walk across a beautiful beach, crossing the headland, with fine sea views, wildlife, wildflowers and seabirds [possibly some puffins], returning at leisure through the amazing dunes, peace and tranquillity.

Guided Ranger Walk to Ferry Point in Dingwall

Join the Ranger for a wee walk in nature and discover the wildlife around Dingwall.

This will be a free short walk starting from the library. We will walk down to Ferry Point and back looking out for Dingwall’s wild residents.

This is a free event funded by the Green Libraries Project.

A very fine coastal walk at Scourie bay

Part of the Beach of Dreams programme 2025 Beach of Dreams

A wonderful 3km undulating but gentle guided walk around the coastal bay at Scourie village, with fine seascapes, otter signs, ancient geology, seabirds, wildflowers, fresh air and exercise.

Amazing Achmelvich 

Guided walk to see early orchids, jewelled rocks and marvellous machair as we walk along a coastline steeped in crofting history, to the old mill at Altanabradhan. We will see early specialists and some migrant birds. The total length of the walk is 6km, over rough path with a few steep steps. Suitable for families. Bring packed lunch. Open to anyone between 11 and 24 years old, to do positive conservation tasks in the Culag Community Woods in Lochinver, such as ditch digging, planting trees, removing small spruce trees, digging ponds, building shelters etc using hand tools. This is part of Assynt’s well-being project. Meet at Assynt Leisure Centre. Bring old clothes and wellies. All tools/gloves are provided.

Nature Club is a gathering in our community library to celebrate, learn about and experience nature.

It is open to all children between 7 and 12 years old. Booking is not required, just turn up. Parents are welcome to stay and participate.

Volunteer Day – Sunart Footpaths

Join Ranger Eilidh-Ann and Sunart Community Company on this regular volunteer session. This month we will be making improvements to the Ardnastaing Beach path so please bring gloves, loppers, hand saws and spades. No need to book – this is a drop-in activity.

Balblair Rare

This will be a short guided walk from the car parking area at the entrance to Balblair woods at Loch Fleet, Golspie. From the path we will be able to see the beautiful woodland wildflowers One-flowered wintergreen and Twinflower. These flowers are particularly rare in Scotland today as they are ancient native pinewood specialists, they are not worth missing!

Assynt Conservation Volunteer Day, Lochinver

Join the Ranger and Assynt Field Club volunteers (over 18yrs only) to do some fun conservation work with like-minded people. We might be clearing small regenerating spruce trees, digging a pond, building a boardwalk or other activities. Contact Andy beforehand to check meeting place on the day. All tools/gloves are provided and enjoy a warm drink and blether at the end.
