This 1893 plan of the Inn at Kilmaluag is taken from our Macdonald and Fraser Solicitors’ Papers. (SL/D123/95). The Kilmaluag Inn is marked on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey Map which was surveyed in 1875. According to the accompanying Ordnance Survey field notebooks the Kilmaluag Inn was: ‘a house one storey in height, thatched, and in fair repair. Licensed to sell spirits, Porter and ales, and capable of accommodating a few travellers. Accommodation, however, only of an inferior order, and rarely put up at, unless in cases of emergency, such as snow-storms, break downs or sickness. Captain Fraser’s property’.
In 1855 Captain William Fraser bought the Kilmuir Estate, encompassing the whole of the parish of Kilmuir and part of the parish of Snizort, from the Trustee of Lord Macdonald’s Estate. These estate papers form part of our Macdonald and Fraser (later Christie and Ferguson) Collection and are available to view in the searchroom at the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre.
