The Banks of Bayfield: Salmon Fishing in Skye and Raasay
Our new exhibition will be available until Friday 29 September during usual archive centre opening hours: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri from 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm.
The display features photographs and business papers from the West Highland Salmon Fisheries Co Ltd, which operated from 1944-1962 by James Banks and family. The fishing stations at Lealt, Rigg, Staffin, Portree, Camustianavaig, Balmeanach and Brochel Castle, provided seasonal employment to approximately twenty-eight local men each year. The Banks’ family home in Bayfield was their base in Skye throughout the salmon fishing season, from late April to August. The company was sold in 1962 to the Matheson family, Portree, and the business papers were donated to the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre in 2004.
For the duration of our exhibition we are offering a 10% discount on A4 photo prints from the Banks Collection. This special offer of £4.95 per image will be available on orders placed with the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre by 5pm on Friday 29 September 2017.
If you don’t live locally, and aren’t able to view the exhibition, our offer extends to online sales of the Banks Collection. The images can be viewed on the Am Baile website and many will also feature on our Facebook page over the next couple of weeks.
